On-Site Recycling of Existing Pavement

Summary

A hardening agent, Portland cement or lime, is spread on deteriorated asphalt pavement, the pavement is broken-up and mixed with the agent in-situ, making a strong recycled base course.

Merit

  • Asphalt surface course and base course are broken and mixed in one operation to shorten construction period.
  • No material is wasted, making waste dumping unnecessary. No new material is used, eliminating nuisances in roadside areas and interruption of traffic.

Use

  • Cracked roads.
  • Reinforcement of pavement structure of roads carrying light traffic.
  • Roads of poor smoothness due to patching, etc.

Past performance

National highways, prefectural roads, municipal roads, forest roads, farm roads, grounds of firms.

A treatise on this method won the 1st prize in a competition sponsored by the Japan Road Contractors Association.
